Infant and Toddler Care 3 semester hours Course Description: A course on the care and education of infants and toddlers, birth to age three in group settings (i.e. child care centers, family child care homes, Early Head Start). Includes rationales and strategies for supporting the whole child including cognitive, language, social-emotional and physical development in a safe, responsive environment. Emphasis is on relationship-based care and education with special attention to the unique environmental aspects of programs for the child under three. Course Outcomes: The student will: · Know about current issues and trends in infant and toddler care. · Identify components of quality care for infants and toddlers in group settings. · Know and understand the key developmental issues of infants and toddlers. · Create, evaluate, and select developmentally appropriate materials, equipment, and environments for infants and toddlers. · Demonstrate an understanding of responsive, culturally sensitive, care-giving techniques based on caring routines and child development and learning. · Develop parent communication strategies based upon an understanding of the unique needs of parents of infants and toddlers. · Use documentation to enhance parent’s understanding of how a young infant and toddler learns.
